S.E.X.

If the string of these three letters has you blushing, thinking of Barry White or latex bodysuits, you are in for a treat.

I don’t need to tell you this, you know sex is everywhere. Beyond its constant use by the media and advertisers, sex has been used as a tool - for power, for money, in the subway, in art, in Instagram, and mail – for millennia. Sex is human, a cultural compass that defines us as the creatures we have become.

Sex’s influence on design and architecture is sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious. It runs deep, dating back to antiquity, and continues to excite us all.  To understand sex in design is to understand its context, both culturally and historically.

To us, unearthing its influence is important, as our studio was founded on sex and nightlife. During ICRAVE’s infancy as a design/build studio, our founders spent their waking hours creating iconic environments that would excite anticipation. Those first night clubs were the foundation to all the hospitality work that quickly followed. Back then, our job was to anticipate people’s wants before they even knew them. Throughout the process, we learned how to properly structure stripper poles and wrap banquettes with fabric strong enough to withstand the sharp heels of stiletto shoes. Yes, the old days were indeed fun – living right at the brink of being too much or just enough.

For The NSFW Issue, we are taking a deep dive to find sex’s influence in design in both obvious and veiled places, with the hope of better understanding its power and its potential. From furniture design, to the influence of sex on typography, and the mad method for re-imagining the champagne room, this issue will open your eyes to the secret, juicy, sexy life of design.
